I just finished watching an episode of Cesar Millan´s Dog Whisperer on Animal Planet and one of the cases was a rottweiler adoption.
Have to say what a great TV program this is.
A lady found two rottweiler puppies that where somehow abandoned on the street and decided to take them home. Talking about instant rottweiler adoption...
This lady was living with her sister and a little daughter. Anyway she had great problems controlling the high energy of the rottweiler puppies and was starting to have concerns because they could hurt her little daughter.
When Cesar came in to help he showed them how to be a pack leader, how to command energy and give the same corrections that a mother rottie would give them.
What a great exemple on what it takes to be a rottweiler owner. As we always say, be firm without hitting or yelling to your rottweiler.

Rottweiler attacks
Some people are scared about rottweilers because they may have heard some media reports about rottweiler attacks.
These stories about rottweiler attacks are always talking bad about the breed and do not take into consideration single specific situations in which rottweiler attacks might have occured.
Three weeks ago I was talking with a man who owns a female rottweiler and lives in a fenced house with a big backyard.
One day he forgot his keys of the fence door and had to jump over it in order to get into his yard. The first thing I asked him was "hey you have a rottweiler, rotties are great guard dogs why didn´t you call your dog so she knew it was you"?
To this he replied that he thought that the dog would be in the backyard of the house, chained and therefore not able to be in the front. No worries about rottweiler attacks.
As soon as he jumped over the fence and walked a couple of steps, his rottie came out of nowhere and bit his leg. "Hey hey hey it´s me" he was screaming and then his rottie let go of him looking away knowing she did something wrong.
And then he went to the hospital to get some stiches. The doctor asked what kind of attack it was and he replied my rottweiler attack and told the story.
The weeks after the incident he recalled that his dog was always sniffing the leg where she bit and looking at the owner with her head down as if she wanted to say "I´m sorry".
So next time you hear about rottweiler attacks be sure to investigate what happened and see if the rottweiler attacks was the dog´s fault or a person´s fault.
You´ll be surprised that normally you´ll find a human error.

Same breed, different instincts
When you think about a certain breed of dogs people tend to associate certain traits to it.
For exemple, rotties are good guard dogs, are very friendly with their owners,...
Setters are good hunting dogs, difficult to train and so on...
But even inside a specific breed there could be differences.
Two months ago I was talking with a friend who has a male German Shepherd. Last summer his parents traveled with the dog to a remote region of Greece where there were a lot of sheeps running around freely.
Although the dog never saw any sheeps previously in his life he immediately proceeded to group them as if he did this his entire life. Amazing how his instincts were so strong considering that nobody ever taught him how to do this.
Three weeks ago I told this same story to another owner of a female German Shepherd. And you know what his comments were? "Oh no, I can´t leave my dog alone with sheeps because she would kill them"

Rottweiler psychologist
Believe it or not nowdays there is a profession that is increasing at a great speed.
We are talking about dog psychologists.
These so called experts (sometimes they are but not always) come from different fields such as veterinary, psychology and so on.
The problems that are faced most of the time are aggression due to dominance, separation anxiety, phobias and obsessive compulsive disorders.
But you know what is interesting about most of the problems?
The one who should change the behavior first is the owner not the dog.
Most of the time all the above described problems are generated by spoiling the dogs too much, thinking about the dog in human terms (this is when you think that dogs have the same mindset as people) or treating them badly by not giving them enough space, excercise, fun/play time and so on.

I don´t want him to be nice, I want him to be bad
A while ago on a trip to a northeastern region here in Brazil we ended up in a bar that was right in front of the beach.
The owner had two beautiful mixed dogs that looked like a mixture between a lab and a coocker spaniel.
These two dogs were always interacting with the bar clients and having a great time.
Speaking with the owner he told us he just got a german shepherd puppy from a friend and asked if we wanted to see him.
This beautiful little pup was about a month old and could almost fit in the palm of your hand.
When we asked the owner if the pup would soon join the other two dogs he said "no, I will keep him chained, I don´t want him to be nice like the other two, I want him to be a mean guard dog".
Hmmmm, this is exactly how you should NOT treat your guard dog.
We are using this example with a german shepherd but it could very well apply to a rottie as well.
A well balanced rottie or gshepherd should be well balanced and have a guard instinct without the need of chaining him up all the time.
He will have an incredible judgment of when to be friendly and when the owner needs protection.
Believe it.
Chaining him up all the time will only backfire at you.
So here is the tip for the day, don´t keep your rottie chained too often, no dog likes to be chained.

Rottweiler caring
Today we are going over the subject of giving your rottie a bath.
Before going into details on how to do it we would like you to remember that dogs, unlike humans, do not need to bath very often.
What do we mean by "often"? Unless your rottie is rolling in the mud on a frequent basis you should give a bath only once a month.
You see dogs have self cleaning substances in their coats and if we give baths too often then we deprive them of this auto protection.
Conclusion: too many baths = your rottie stinks more.
Now that you know the frequency let us show you te main steps of the bathing process:
1. Test the water to be neither cold nor warm. Lukewarm is best.
2. Put a good amount of shampoo to care of all the dirt, then rinse well to remove all the soap. Do not leave soap on your rottie´s coat. hint: use only dog shampoo not human as it can cause allergies.
3. If you are using a tank or tub, make sure that your rottie is secured safely.
4. Wash the head beeing careful that no shampoo goes into the eyes.
After finishing give your rottie a nice treat for behaving so well during the process.

Rottweiler behavior
Rottweiler behavior - First Part
Imagine having a dog that is both powerful and gentle.
Imagine that he is there to protect you but knows when someone is your friend and accepts him.
This would be a dream dog right? Well my friend welcome to the rotties world.
A well trained and balanced rottweiler will protect you from a thief trying to get to your house and at the same time know that someone is your friend because he picks up on your energy toward this person.
That´s a typical rottweiler behavior
We have seen lots of cases where rotties acted this way. That´s the good news.
The bad news is that the media almost only reports the other side of the coin. "rotties biting this" "rottweilers attacking that..." and so on...

Big German Rottweilers
If you are looking for big german rottweilers there are some things that you must keep in mind. First of all the rottweiler breed has some very well defined standards that should not tollerate too big rottweilers or too small rottweilers.
You should try to stick with the standards because they exist for a reason.
Proportionate rottweilers are both strong, agile and good looking. There is harmony between all the body parts.

Dog skin problems
How about dog skin problems? It is our experience that sooner or later almost all rotties get them wheather they are temporary or chronic.
When this happens owners get very confused as to the cause.
To simplify the diagnosis keep in mind that there usually are six essential categories of dog skin problems as follows:
1. Allergies, for exemple a reaction to a type of dog food, medications, flowers or flea and thick bites.
2. Environment: did you use a new type of detergent to clean the carpet or the kennel where your rottie is staying? Try removing it and see what happens
3. Infections, which could be bacterial, viral or fungal.
4. Neurogenic; this is when your rottie has some kind of obsessive compulsive disorder that triggers the compulsion to lick himself until there is an irritation on the skin.
5. Food, this is when some key ingredient is missing from your dog´s diet. You might even want to look at a natural diet instead of just feeding dog food.
6. Parasites such as fleas, thicks and mites which can produce a variety of skin problems.
As you can see the causes of dog skin problems are different and sometimes hard to detect.

Vision Test
Yesterday I was reading a magazine which had a very interesting article on how dogs see.
In the past scientists believed that dogs could only see black and white and not the colors.
Now we know that your best friend sees the colors but is not always able to differenciate one from another.
The main difference seems to be between the color red and green. Dogs cannot tell which is which.
On the other hand they can tell the difference between blue and green.
To make the point, the article wants you to make the following test:
1. Take two balls, one red and one blue.
2. Take your rottie on a green surface (like your backyard or garden) holding her on the leash.
3. Have someone throw the two balls at the same time.
4. Let your rottie chase them only once they are about 30 feet away.
Your rottie will most likely follow the blue ball which is easier for her to see.
Try this test, and let us know the outcome.

Superior Rottweilers
What exactly are superior rottweilers? Superior rottweilers are the ones that are bred by responsible breeders who take pride in what they do and are concerned with this wonderful breed.
Below you can find some details from the Canadian Rottweiler Breed Standard that can guide you to knowing a little more about what superior rottweilers are:
General Appearance:
The ideal rottweiler is an above medium sized, robust, and powerful dog, balck with clearly difined rich tan markings. His compact build denotes great strenght, agility, and endurance. Malers are acharacteristically larger, heavier boned and more masculine in appearance.
Temperament:
The Rottweiler should possess a fearless expression with a self-assured aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. He has a strong willingness to work. In examining superior rottweilers one should bear in mind that this dog reacts with alertness to his master and his surroundings, and in performing his function in life, rottweilers are not expected to submit to excessive handling by strangers. However, the judge shall dismiss from the ring any shy or vicious Rottweiler. A dog shall be judged fundamentally shy if, refusing to stand for examination it shrinks away from the judge, if it fears an unexpected approach form the rear, if it shies at a sudden or unusual noises to a marked degree. A dog that attacks or attempts to attack, without provocation, either the judge, or its handler is definitely vicious. An aggressive or belligerent attitude towards other dogs shall not be deemed viciousness.
Size:
Dogs24 -27 inches (60 - 68 cms). Bitches 22 - 25 inches (55 - 63 cms)

The lenght of the body, from the breastbone (sternum) to the rear of edge of the pelvis (ischium) is slightly longer than the height of the dog at the withers, the most desirable proportion being as 10 to 9. Depth of the chest should be fifty percent of the height.
Coat and Colour:
Outer coat is straight, coarse, dense, medium length, lying flat. Undercoat must be present on neck and thights. The Rottweiler should be exhibited in a natural condition without trimming, except to remove whiskers, if desired. The colour is always black with rich tan or mahogany markings. The borderline between the black and the colour should be clearly defined. The markings should be located as follows: a spot over each eye, on cheeks, as a strip around each side of the muzzle, but not on the bridge of the nose; on throat; a proportionate trinagular mark on either side of the breastbone not to exceed 25 per cent of the forechest; on forelegs from carpus downward to toes; on inside of the rear legs showing down the front of the stifle and broadening out to front of rear legs from hock to toes but not eliminating the black from the back of the legs; under tail. Black pensiling markings of the toes. The undercoat is gray or black. Quantity and location of markings are important. Insufficient or excessive markings should be penalized.

Prevention of bad behavior
My rottie is very friendly inside my house and yard but as soon as I take him on a walk he transforms himself into a beast.
My rottie loves people but he gets crazy when he sees other animals especially dogs.
My rottie hates the mailman and wants to catch him when he drives by with his motorcycle.
These are some of the problems new rottie owners have and can be quite a headache if you don´t deal with them correctly.
The first thing you should do when getting a rottie pup is making a list of what he will be exposed to and then get him used to it from very early on.
Get him to know other dogs during your walks and he won´t react with high aggression when he will be an adult.
Get him to know the mailman as a pup so he won´t think it´s a danger.
What you should not do is for exemple confine your rottie in your yard for the first two years and then take him on a walk thinking he will be just fine with everything.

How to deal with the adolescent rottie
Sometimes we receive questions from rottie owners who are worried that their adolescent rotties are too hyper and very difficult to control.
It´s perfectly normal that young rotties have this kind of energy and need some activities to deal with it.
Now if you would like to teach your rottie a trick or any basic command please don´t try to do it when they are in "hyper mode".
Instead play with them some games such as throwing a ball or a frisbee until they are a little tired.
Then and only then start slowly with whatever you want to teach her.
When teaching always be calm, but at the same time using an exciting voice tone when she does the right thing.
If you are having a bad day, are pissed, depressed or on any other kind of negative feeling then wait for it to pass before starting a training session.
Your rottie will pick up your vibe. That´s for sure.

The first rottweiler to be registered in the American Kennel Club was in 1930. AKC recognition of the breed was achieved in 1931 with very very few rottweilers in the country.
While the american rottweilers has had five important breed clubs in USA, the American Rottweiler Club founded in 1971 is to be considered the official american rottweilers club.
The other clubs are the Colonial Rottweiler Club, the Medallion Rottweiler Club and the Golden State Rottweiler Club.
During the 1990s american rottweilers have been one of the most popular breed only loosing to labradors.
More than a hundred thousand rotties have been registered during the 1990s.
In recent years because of some bad press these numbers have decreased a little but americans seem to relate a lot to this wonderful breed.
